Who
This training course is designed for personnel who are required to use Cable avoidance tools (CAT) and signal generating (Genny) equipment in the course of their daily duties.
Aims
To provide the skills and knowledge of candidates in the use of CAT and GENNY, in accordance with company safety standards, HSE guidance HSG 47, and manufactures guidance.
Objectives
To assess candidates skills and knowledge in the effective use of Cable avoiding tools (CAT and GENNY) and service plans.

Introduction, aim and objectives
Theory of cable avoidance and limits of detection
Safe systems of work (where held)
Pre-use checks and testing of CAT & GENNY
Calibration requirements
Health and Safety guidance and information (HSG 47)
Interpretation and use underground service plans, Including
• Electric
• Gas
• Telecoms
• Clean water
• Foul water
• Orientation
Site specific risk assessment and visual inspection in relation to underground services
Practical training in using CAT (Power, Radio, Avoidance Scan and Genny Mode)
Practical training in setting up the GENNY in Connection Mode (Street Lighting)
Practical training in the use of GENNY in Induction Mode (search carriage way/footway)
Action on the event of strike alert notification
Practical training in the use of specific Attachments (if applicable)
Procedures for service marking, inside and outside of excavation area
Practical assessment
