From the 10th September 2009 a legislative directive came into force with the aim to improve the skills and knowledge of LGV & PCV drivers. All Professional LGV & PCV drivers must complete 35 hours of training before Sept 2013 (PCV) and Sept 2014 (LGV) respectively. Applicable to licence categories: C1, C1+E, C, C+E, D1, D1+E, D, D+E
Aims
To ensure that professional drivers are aware of the needs of vulnerable road users, can assess and control risk and continue to drive in a safe and efficient manner. On completion of this training course, candidates will have a greater understanding of their duties and responsibilities as professional drivers, in accordance with current legislation and good practice.

What is a vulnerable road user?
‘Vulnerable road user’ means pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and horse-riders. It refers to anyone using roads without a vehicle around them offering protection. If someone in a vehicle is in a collision, they have the frame of the vehicle and often other features like air bags and crumple zones to help absorb the force of the crash and provide protection. If a vulnerable road user is in a collision, they are exposed to the full force of the impact. Due to the vulnerability of these road users, drivers should do everything they can to ensure they are not putting them in danger.
