Crane AP Who is this for?

This training course is designed for personnel involved in the planning of lifting operations, who have sufficient knowledge, experienced in the use of Lifting equipment and accessories. Candidates should have passed the Managerial & Professional Health & Safety touch screen test within the last 2 years before undertaking the CPCS AP Technical Test

Crane Appointed Person (A61) course:

The aim of this training course is to provide candidates with sufficient underpinning knowledge in order for them to understand the role and responsibility of the Appointed Person. On completion of training, candidates should have an accepted knowledge of the legal and safety duties in relation to lifting operations. Plan and organise a lift safely in compliance with LOLER 1998 Regulation 8.

Course content:

Introduction

  • Supporting Legislation relevant to lifting operations
  • Supporting codes of practice and British Standards
  • Roles and responsibilities associated to lifting operations
  • Crane appreciation – crane types, capabilities and limitations
  • Understanding duties charts and manufactures information sources
  • Understanding crane and industry terminology
  • Documentation and certification for lifting equipment and lifting accessories
  • Crane stability and supporting conditions
  • Understanding Safe Load Indicators (SLI), Safe Working Loads (SWL) and Working Load Limit
  • Identification and operational criteria for lifting accessories
  • Understanding the synergy between sling angles and safe working load
  • Safe slinging techniques
  • Protection and storage of lifting accessories
  • Methods of communication between crane operator and slinger/signaller
  • Lift planning in practice
  • Understanding risk and hazard
  • Writing a risk assessment (end test requirement)
  • Writing a method statement (end test requirement)

Duration: 4 Days

Grants available:

The following grants available for eligible employers:

  • £50 per day for training days only
  • £190 for successful completion of the Practical Test
  • £60 for successful completion of the Theory Test
