The NRSWA Qualification Course

C & G has been approved by City and Guilds to offer specialist training in streetworks for supervisors and operatives. All trainees who successfully complete the assessment will gain relevant qualifications and accreditation.

C & G has been approved by City and Guilds to offer specialist training in streetworks for supervisors and operatives. All trainees who successfully complete the assessment will gain relevant qualifications and accreditation.

C & G Services has been providing a comprehensive training service to the construction industry for many years. Our approach to training is designed to make learning enjoyable and satisfying, so trainees perform better and achieve better results. We use a highly participative approach, with practical demonstrations illustrated by PowerPoint and videos. There are group and individual exercises.

Qualifications and units

The Street Works (Qualifications of Supervisors and Operatives) Regulations 1992 detail the qualifications prescribed for various types and combinations of work. Each qualification is made up of a series of units. C & G Services provides training and assessments in all these units.

A person may act as a supervisor or trained operative only on the type of work for which they have the relevant qualification. A number of people with different qualifications may have to be involved during the progress of the work through its various stages. There is no limit to the number of qualifications that one person may hold.

Structure of qualifications

Each qualification consists of a number of Units of Competence. Each unit is separately assessed. Trainees build up success in individual units until they meet the requirements for the qualification(s) they need.

Qualifications for supervisors

  1. Monitoring excavation in the highway – Units 1, 10, 11
  2. Monitoring excavation, backfilling and reinstatement of construction layers with bituminous materials – Units 1, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14
  3. Monitoring reinstatement of construction layers in bituminous materials – Units 1, 10, 14
  4. Monitoring reinstatement of concrete slabs – Units 1, 10, 15Monitoring reinstatement of modular surfaces and concrete footways – Units 1, 10, 16

Qualifications for operatives

  1. Excavation in the highway – Units 1, 2, 3
  2. Excavation, backfilling and reinstatement of construction layers with cold-lay bituminous surface – Units 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
  3. Reinstatement of construction layers in hot-lay and cold-lay bituminous layers – Units 1, 2, 6, 7
  4. Reinstatement of concrete slabs – Units 1, 2, 8
  5. Reinstatement of modular surfaces and concrete footways – Units 1, 2, 9

Units of Accreditation for supervisors

1. Location and avoidance of underground apparatus
10. Signing, lighting and guarding
11. Excavation in the highway
12. Reinstatement and compaction of backfill materials
13. Reinstatement of sub-base and roadbase in non-bituminous materials
14. Reinstatement of bituminous materials
15. Reinstatement of concrete slabs
16. Reinstatement of modular surfaces and concrete footways

Units of Accreditation for operatives

1. Location and avoidance of underground apparatus
2. Signing, lighting and guarding

4. Reinstatement and compaction of backfill materials

Award of qualifications

Staff are granted qualifications only after assessment. There is no formal requirement to receive training before the assessment, but most people are likely to need to be updated in the latest methods and materials used.

The Street Works Qualification Register

Records of qualifications are maintained in the national Street Works Qualification Register. Each person on the register is issued with a personal identity card showing their qualifications. Please Note: Holders need to be reassessed every five years.
