Aims and Objectives:

To ensure that candidates gain a uniform understanding of health, safety and environmental awareness across the utilities sector. On conclusion of this course, candidates will have completed the core modules and relevant job specific modules, providing on site evidence that the candidate has demonstrated an appropriate level of knowledge and awareness.

Course Content:

  • Introduction, aim and objectives.

Module 1 Power Generation & Distribution (Power specific mod-ule)

  • Including forms of generation, transmission & Hv/Lv differ-ences

Module 2 Your Responsibilities

  • Including legal requirements, obligations and require-ments. Poor environmental management. Costs, EA and SEA responsibilities

Module 3 Risk Assessment

  • Including hazard, risk and the assessment process, control measures, hierarchy of control, PPE

Module 4 Workplace Procedures

  • Fire, accident and near miss reporting

Module 5 Power Industry Hazards (Power specific module)

  • Electrical hazards & injuries, control measures, DNO safety rules and authorisation

Module 6 Physical Hazards (Part 1)

  • PUWER, LOLER, work at height & equipment safety

Module 7 Physical Hazards (Part 2)

  • Excavations, services & confined spaces

Module 8 Hazards to Health (Part 1)

  • Manual handling, noise, HAVS & whole body vibration

Module 9 Hazards to Health (Part 2)

  • COSHH, biohazards and OH

Module 10 The Environment

  • Including causes and prevention of environmental damage, correct disposal considerations
