The EU commission have reviewed the Driver CPC directive which now specifies that “a range of different subjects should be covered over the 35 hours. Therefore, DVSA wishes to reemphasise that drivers must not unnecessarily repeat the same periodic training subjects within a rolling five-year period.

DVSA and JAUPT will now monitor training provider uploads and driver records. If we identify training that does not support professional driver development because of unnecessary repetition we may take action against the driver and the trainer. This could include revoking a DQC and reconsidering a training body’s approval to deliver periodic training.

Health and Safety Executive (HSE) estimates put numbers of workplace injuries for 2015 at around 611,000. While some of these will have been unavoidable, the vast majority could have been prevented, either through proper training or an effective risk management strategy.

Most of last year’s injuries were either falls from height, or caused by improper manual handling. Both types of injury fall firmly into the ‘could have been prevented with training’ category. Working Safely at Height and Manual Handling courses should be a key element of any risk management strategy for businesses where those activities take place.

A core element of keeping your workforce safe is first aid training for the prevention of illness or injury in the workplace. Most importantly it is a legal requirement as a company to ensure your employees receive immediate attention if they are injured or taken ill at work.

As an employer you must have in place adequate and appropriate equipment, facilities and personnel to deal with emergency situations to provide first aid before further (professional) support arrives.

While your first aid provision should be specific to your business, your risks and hazards, first aid training is likely to form a key part of your strategy.
