This initial training course is designed for personnel who need to perform basic operation and maintenance of chainsaws. All chainsaw operators are recommended to hold a current emergency first aid certificate

Chainsaw Maintenance, Cross Cutting & Basic Felling Techniques course:

To ensure that Candidates are safe and competent in the operation & maintenance of the Chainsaw and that they are able to undertake basic felling of trees up to 200mm diameter. At the end of this training course Candidates will be competent and proficient in the use of the Chainsaw for Cross Cutting and basic felling operations.

Course content:


  • Hazards and risks associated to chainsaw operations including the task for which the chainsaw is to be used
  • Understand the precautions to control the dangers, including relevant legal requirements.
  • Identify the PPE required, be able to report on its condition and locate standard marks
  • Identify components parts and safety features of a chainsaw
  • Correctly and safely carry routine maintenance and defect reporting
  • Ensuring the correct fuel/oil mix and saw lubrication
  • Safe starting of the chainsaw (hot and cold)
  • Pre-cutting safety tests and failure procedures
  • Cross-cut timber accurately to required lengths
  • Assess and explain tension and compression in timber
  • Adopt safe procedures to remove a trapped guide bar
  • Handle and stack timber in a safe manner
  • Organise site safety and state the procedures required

Basic felling of trees up to 200mm diameter

Additional Notes:

  • Candidates must be in possession of the correct PPE at all times
