Who is this for?

This programme of training and assessment is designed for street works operatives who need to assemble and dismantle temporary signing, lighting & guarding of temporary works and mobile works within the highway in compliance with the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991 (NRSWA).
The NRSWA Signing, Lighting & Guarding – Unit 002 Course:


This course will train and assess operatives in the skills and knowledge required to risk assess, assemble and dismantle temporary Signing, Lighting & Guarding of Street works, Road works and Mobile works. It will also provide operatives with the skill and knowledge to correctly assemble and dismantle temporary Signing, Lighting & Guarding in line with the Safety at Street Works and Road Works code of practice

  • Roles & responsibilities
  • Information required before going to site
  • Risk assessing the site and operating conditions – a continual process
  • General guidance for fixed sites
  • General guidance for short duration and mobile working
  • Purpose and legal status of the Code of Practice
  • Selection and suitability of signs and equipment
  • Advanced signing requirements
  • Safety Zone (lead-in taper, sideways and long ways clearances)
  • Working on/near footways, cycle lanes, bus lanes and tramways
  • Understanding basic site layout
  • Sequence for setting out signs
  • Establishing safe routes for pedestrians and other road users
  • Consideration for vulnerable road users
  • Traffic control and unobstructed carriageway widths
  • Installation and commissioning of traffic control measures
  • Practical scenarios for short duration and mobile works
  • Checking and maintaining unattended sites
  • Removing the works
  • City and guilds practical assessment unit 002.
