Streetworks Refresher and Recertification – Supervisor

Who is this for?

This course has been designed for personnel who have previously completed Street works training and hold current SWQR cards. See foot note on final page.(*)

Streetworks Refresher and Recertification – Supervisor Course:

To provide refresher training through scenarios and exercises for experienced super-visors in the required street works units and assess competence in line with SQA requirements, culminating in the reissue of an SWQR card and continued compliance with the New Roads and Street works Act 1991 and associated codes of practice. To provide supervisors with the skill and knowledge to carry out work to the standards required by the New Roads and Street works Act 1991, in accordance with safe working practices and associated codes of practice.

Course Contents:

Day One

Introduction, aim and objectives. Confirmation of card categories and expiration. Identification of assessment supporting documentation in accordance with SQA centre guidance.

Unit 101 Theory and practical session, including:

Classroom – Updates and theoretical training

Practical – Exercise One. Interpretation of utility plans, orientation to the ground, ground sign and common indicators, tracing and identification of underground services

Unit 001 – SQA assessment preparation and multiple choice assessment

Unit 110 Theory and practical session, including:

Classroom – Updates and theoretical training, introduction to Safety at street and road works (ACoP) and portable traffic signals

Practical – Exercise Two. Observation and reporting. Application of Safety at street and road works (ACoP), monitoring the use of portable traffic signals, traffic control, signage requirements and placing, PPE and interpretation of SSOW

Unit 110 – SQA assessment preparation and multiple choice assessment

Day Two

Unit 111 Theory and practical session, including:

Classroom – Updates and theoretical training, identification of layers and structures

Practical – Exercise Three. Observation and reporting. Monitoring excavation in the highway, utilising a range of powered, com-pressed air and hand tools, segregation and disposal of spoil.

Unit 111 – SQA assessment preparation and multiple choice assessment

Units 112 & 113 Theory and practical session, including:

Classroom – Updates and theoretical training, backfill, reinstate using non-bituminous materials and identification of material suit-ability for reinstatement purposes.

Practical – Exercise Four. Observation and reporting. Monitoring reinstatement and compaction of backfill materials, including surround to services, layer construction and compaction using a range of hand and powered equipment, to within required specification.

Unit 112 & 113 – SQA assessment preparation and multiple choice assessment

Day Three

Unit 114 – Theory and practical session, including:

Classroom – Updates and theoretical training of reinstatement in cold-lay bituminous materials

Practical – Exercise Five. Observation and reporting. Monitoring re cutting edges as required and ensure placement of layers to correct specification, confirmation of selection and use of compaction equipment used in accordance with specification.

Unit 114 – SQA assessment preparation and multiple choice assessment

Unit 116 – Theory and practical session, including:

Classroom – Updates and theoretical training of modular surfaces and concrete footways, including area calculation and component requirements and compaction equipment and use.

Practical – Exercise Six. Observation and reporting. Monitoring of surface preparation, placement of modules, bedding and selection and use of compaction equipment, and mixing, recording of slump/suitability test, observation of placement and compaction of concrete. Ensuring provision of a wearing surface.

Unit 116 – SQA assessment preparation and multiple choice assessment

Footnote:

* Card holders need to be reassessed every 5 years.

A card can be renewed six months either side of the expiry date shown on it.

Where a card is re-registered within this period, the new card will last for five years from when the old one expires.

2 x passport photographs will be required for SWQR card registration
