Who

This unit is for those who work in a medium risk environment and reflects the NOS (National Occupational Standards for Controlling Entry and Arrangements for working in a Medium Risk Confined Space Environment) including preparing to work safely, entering and exiting medium risk confined spaces safely, using equipment and tools safely, following procedures and dealing with emergencies. This unit covers both water and non-water industry areas.

Aims

▪ Prepare to work safely in medium risk confined spaces including checking the equipment, authorization, health and safety information, communications, maintaining a safety zone, carry out Point of Work Risk Assessment and monitoring equipment ▪ Interpret the Water UK Confined Spaces classification scheme ▪ Enter and exit a confined space safely including the use of the monitoring equipment Checking access equipment, carrying out a safety inspection, following procedures, resolving exit and entry problems, identifying unsafe activity ▪ Use equipment and tools safely ▪ Follow working procedures and monitoring the work team to ensure correct procedures are followed ▪ Deal with emergencies including making emergency arrangements and following emergency procedures ▪ Understand the principles of working in medium risk confined spaces ▪ Understand standard protocols for working in medium risk confined spaces ▪ Understand entry controller duties and responsibilities including describing confined space incidents and their effect on personnel and explaining how to close down and make entry points safe and secure ▪ Understand equipment checks and inspection required including identifying defects and actions to take when dealing with faulty equipment ▪ Risk assess residual hazards

Objectives

▪ Recognise changing environments, hazards, substances and situations associated with different types of confined spaces ▪ Use and interpret gas monitors to verify safe atmospheres ▪ Understand the nature and occurrence of problem atmospheres ▪ Use ancillary safety items harness, ropes, winches and life lines ▪ Use open circuit (CABA) escape breathing apparatus safely ▪ Work following a safe system of work ▪ React positively in an emergency situation with basic emergency first aid (CPR)

Outline

This unit is for those who work in a medium risk environment and reflects the NOS (National Occupational Standards for Controlling Entry and Arrangements for working in a Medium Risk Confined Space Environment) including preparing to work safely, entering and exiting medium risk confined spaces safely, using equipment and tools safely, following procedures and dealing with emergencies. This unit covers both water and non-water industry areas:
Water: this may include working with potable water, sewage treatment processes, drain and sewer cleaning operations or where the operative is working in or near water or where a confined space is subject to surface water flooding.

Non-water: this may include pharmaceutical, petrochemical, asbestos removal, vehicle manufacture and servicing, aeronautical, construction, communications, power, utilities, gas, electrical and mechanical engineering and some elements of work operations in mines, quarries and tunnelling.
